Natural Hazards


- A natural hazard is an event that causes loss of human lives and properties. They are caused by extreme weather conditions and earth movements.

Structure of the Earth
Crust
- Made up of rocks and soil which is not uniform in thickness, some parts are thicker, forming the continents; others are thinner, forming the ocean-floors.
Mantle
- Made up of very hot molten rocks called magma. - The upper layer is upper mantle.
- The lower layer is lower mantle.
- Semi fluid
Core
- Made up of heavy metals under high temperature and high pressure.

How does the crust move?

- The crust is not a single piece, it is broken into pieces called plates. The narrow zone between two moving plates is called plate boundary. The narrow zone between two moving plates is called plate boundary.

- Plates move slowly because of convection currents of magma in the mantle. The plates sometimes move away, move towards and slide past each other along the plate boundaries.

- Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and fold mountains are caused because of plate movements.

What are earthquakes? Why do earthquakes occur?

Earthquakes are the violent shaking of the earth’s crust. Earthquakes occur where plates move towards (destructive plate boundary) or move past (conservative plate boundary) each other. Such plate movement creates pressure and causes the rocks to break. At the crack or the focus, shock waves spread out. The earth’s surface above will shake and earthquake is resulted.

The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. The higher the scale, the greater the damage, the lower the frequency of occurrence.


Why are there volcanic eruptions? How do volcanoes form?

When plates move, magma rises through cracks and stored in the magma chamber of the earth’s crust. When there is too much pressure in the magma chamber, the volcano erupt, lava, ash and gases come out. Magma rises and flows out as lava layer by layer. Lava cools to form volcanoes.

What are the hazardous effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions?

1. Prediction

- Watch out for nature’s weird/abnormal behaviors

- Check the temperature and pressure of volcanoes

- Study the history of earthquakes/volcanic eruptions

 

2. Planning

- Set up evacuation route with adequate road signs

- Avoid dangerous land use in hazard prone areas

- Earthquake-proof buildings/infrastructure

- Set up monitoring and warning systems

- Prepare for relief work, shelters, and rescue team

- Earthquake drills

What are the factors affecting the degree of damage caused by earthquakes?

2. Gentle slopes at the bottom of volcanoes are suitable for farming and building houses.
3. Volcanic ash make the soil fertile.
4. Useful minerals (e.g. diamonds, gold, iron) are found in volcanic areas.
5. Steam and heat in the volcanic areas provide geothermal power.
6. Many big cities which are affected by earthquakes have a lot of money and technology. People think that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

1. Layer colouring

Colours represent different range of heights. The colour brown shows the highest places and the colour green shows the lowest places.

2. Spot heights

They are points marked on maps with their heights printed beside them.

3. Trigonometrical station

It is shown as a triangle with a dot in the centre, height is marked at the side.

4. Contours

A contour line is a line joining places of equal height on a map. A number is written along the contour to show its height. The steeper the slope, the closer the contours. The difference between the heights of two adjacent contour lines is known as vertical interval.

Gradient

It can be used to determine the steepness of a slope.

Reduced bearing

There are 360o in a compass circle which can be divided in 4 equal sections, each has 90o.

Reduced bearing is measured in degrees from the north or the south (always starts with N or S, followed by a degree and then E or W) **e.g. A is N37oE from B.

What is a landslide?

A landslide is the movement of soil and rocks down a slope due to gravity.

In Hong Kong, landslides often occur near urban areas. They happen mainly on steep slopes during the rainy season.

What are the causes of landslides?

- Heavy rainfall adds weight and washes loose rocks and soil down a slope.

- Hilly relief and steep slopes

- Urban development on hills (e.g. housing and roads) clears the natural vegetation and adds weight onto slopes

- Cutting makes slopes steeper and unstable because soil and rocks are cut out of the slope and removed

- Poor maintenance of man-made slopes allow water to seep into the soil

What are the effects of landslides?

- Injury or death

- Damage and disruption to infrastructure

- Collapsing buildings

Ways to avoid slope failure and minimize loss

- Spread cement on slopes to prevent water seepage

- Install weepholes and drainage channels to reduce pressure from water

- Install soil nails to anchor soil to the slope

- Build retaining walls to strengthen cut slopes

- Plant vegetation to protect slopes from erosion

- Proper maintenance to man-made slopes through laws and regulations

- Provide early warnings of landslides to the public

- Educate the public on the importance of slope safety

What is a monsoon climate?
It is the seasonal wind which changes directions in between winter and summer. Land absorbs and loses heat faster than the sea. In summer the land is generally cooler than the sea, in winter the land is generally hotter than the sea. This temperature difference creates a pressure difference over the land and sea. Wind blows from areas of high pressure to area of low pressure. Wind coming from the sea is wet. This brings heavy rainfall and sometimes major rainstorms in summer.

Why does most of Asia suffer from typhoons?

Typhoons are tropical storms that commonly occur in summer. They are low pressure systems. For typhoons to form they require a plentiful supply of warm moist air and a sustained ocean temperature over 26.5oC.

These conditions create a low pressure system which combines with the rotation of the earth produce spiraling winds and storm clouds.

Typhoons bring heavy rainfall that may cause flooding or landslides. They occur mostly in the summer.
